2027 Can-Am Outlander DPS 1000

Can-Am · 1001cc V-twin (Rotax DOHC), liquid-cooled

$12,999 MSRP (base)

What's new for 2027

Can-Am now calls the 82 hp DPS package Outlander DPS 1000 rather than DPS 850. The 2026 and 2027 sheets agree on 82 hp, 66 lb-ft, 942 lb estimated dry weight, 52.8 in wheelbase, 11.5 in clearance, 5.1 gal fuel and 1,830 lb braked-trailer towing. The 2027 sheet says 1001cc while the 2026 sheet says 999cc; the published output is unchanged, so the new name should not be sold as a major performance increase. U.S. starting MSRP is $12,999, up $200 from 2026, before transportation and preparation.

In-depth review

Reviewed by The ATVPedia Editorial Team · Updated

The 2027 Can-Am Outlander DPS 1000 is easy to misunderstand because its name puts it in the same family as the 101-hp 1000R. This Granite Grey DPS has 82 hp, a simpler Visco-Lok QE front differential and a $12,999 starting MSRP. It is the substantial V-twin Outlander for a rider who wants power steering and trail pace without automatically paying for the 1000R’s more aggressive hardware.

This is a specification-based review, not a claimed ride test. The manufacturer’s 2027 U.S. spec sheet is the source for this exact one-seat package. If dry weight, tow ratings and other catalog terms need translating, see how to read ATV and UTV specs.

Price and the 850-to-1000 name change

Can-Am lists the 2027 DPS 1000 at $12,999 U.S. MSRP before transportation and preparation. Its 2026 DPS 850 counterpart started at $12,799. That is a $200 increase in published starting price, not an estimate of the out-the-door difference. Compare dealer setup, tax, accessory installation and any leftover-model discounts before deciding which year costs less.

The 2027 name is the important editorial trap. Can-Am’s 2026 DPS 850 sheet lists 82 hp, 66 lb-ft, 942 lb estimated dry weight, a 52.8-inch wheelbase and 11.5-inch clearance. The 2027 DPS 1000 sheet lists those same figures. The newer sheet calls the V-twin 1001cc while the older sheet calls it 999cc. Those published descriptions do not support a claim that the 2027 machine gained 150cc or a major jump in performance simply because the badge changed from 850 to 1000. Can-Am does publish slightly different overall body dimensions for the two years, so verify trailer fit using the vehicle you actually buy.

The 82-hp V-twin and what it drives

The liquid-cooled Rotax DOHC V-twin is rated at 82 hp and 66 lb-ft. Intelligent Throttle Control feeds electronic fuel injection. The pDrive CVT offers low and high ranges with park, neutral and reverse. Can-Am lists Work, Standard and Sport modes, intelligent engine braking and Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering. Those controls matter in different ways: throttle mode changes response, engine braking helps manage descents, and steering assistance reduces low-speed effort. None substitutes for careful brake use or the operator’s guide when towing.

Selectable 2WD/4WD uses a Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential. It is not the manually selectable Visco-4Lok system fitted to some 1000R packages. Nor does this DPS sheet claim the special 1000R CVT calibration. The difference is not academic if you are shopping for a particular style of traction control or repeated hard launches. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact controls on the machine in front of you.

The 5.1-gallon tank is unchanged from the prior DPS 850. Can-Am does not give a dependable miles-per-tank figure because throttle use, hills, mud, temperature, tire pressure and cargo change fuel consumption. Leave a margin on long routes rather than inferring range from an idealized test ride.

Chassis and suspension in real space

This is a large single-rider ATV. Can-Am lists 49.2 inches of width, an 85.8-inch overall length and a 52.8-inch wheelbase. Estimated dry weight is 942 lb before fuel, rider, tools or accessories. It can feel planted in open terrain, but it is not a small quad to muscle around a shed. The 49.2-inch body also should not be treated as automatic permission for every nominal 50-inch trail. Check the trail rule, the vehicle’s actual tire width and any gates.

Arched double A-arms provide 10.8 inches of front travel and 12 inches at the rear. Twin-tube shocks and 26-inch tires on 12-inch aluminum wheels are the DPS equipment. Ground clearance is 11.5 inches. Those are useful trail numbers, but the stock shocks are not the FOX piggybacks in the Outlander XT-P 1000R. The spec sheet lists dual 214 mm front brake discs and a single 214 mm rear disc. Do not copy the four-disc claim from higher 1000R configurations onto this model.

Towing, racks and the missing payload number

Can-Am publishes a 1,830-lb tow rating for a braked trailer and lists a two-inch receiver. That does not mean an unbraked trailer of the same weight is appropriate. Braking ability, tongue load, grade, surface and the tow vehicle’s loaded weight all matter. Confirm the operator-guide instructions for the trailer and route, especially before using the ATV on a steep property track.

The front rack is rated for 120 lb and the rear for 240 lb. Integrated storage totals 10.6 gallons, including front drop-down and removable rear compartments. These figures answer different questions. Rack capacity is not tow capacity, and Can-Am does not publish a total payload rating on this trim sheet. Put dense items low, secure loose gear and do not assume that maxing out both racks while towing is a safe combination.

The DPS is a one-rider ATV. The rear rack is not a second seat. A passenger belongs on a purpose-built two-up machine such as an Outlander MAX, with the manufacturer’s rated seat, handholds and footrests.

What comes standard, and what does not

The 7.6-inch digital display, LED headlights and taillights, D.E.S.S. security, full skid plate and 650-watt charging system are useful standard equipment. The display is not the large touch navigation screen pictured on some more expensive Outlanders. Can-Am lists no factory winch for the DPS 1000. If a winch, heavier bumpers or specialized shocks are essential, compare a higher package’s actual equipment with the installed cost of accessories before ordering this one.

The distinction from the 1000R is clear in the engine as well as the equipment. The existing XT-P 1000R is rated at 101 hp and brings a lockable front differential, piggyback shocks and factory winch. The DPS 1000 keeps the stronger-than-midrange V-twin feel on paper while avoiding much of that package’s hardware and expense. It is not a hidden 1000R with a cheaper sticker.

Alternatives worth pricing

The 2027 Outlander 700 is $5,250 cheaper at published MSRP and is rated at 50 hp. It is much lighter, uses the same published 1,830-lb braked-trailer rating and could be the more practical ATV if you rarely use the extra power. The Outlander PRO S HD5 is another work-first choice, with extra-low gearing and heavier protection, but only 40 hp and no power steering on its base package.

Outside Can-Am, the 2027 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Ultimate offers 90 hp, a factory winch and a seven-inch Ride Command display at a higher MSRP, while listing a lower 1,500-lb tow rating. Its standard-width chassis is another way to buy a powerful single-rider ATV, but the equipment and drivetrain approach differ. A side-by-side comparison is more useful than comparing model badges alone.

Pros and cons

The good: 82 hp and 66 lb-ft, power steering, three drive modes, useful storage and racks, and a clearly stated braked-trailer rating. The 26-inch tire and long-travel suspension package suits a machine expected to do both trail and utility miles.

The catch: 942 lb dry is a lot of ATV, the base DPS has no winch or manually lockable front differential, and the standard shocks are simpler than the premium trims’. It carries only one person, and its 1,830-lb tow number should never be quoted without the braked-trailer condition.

Verdict

The Outlander DPS 1000 is for a solo rider who wants a powerful, equipped V-twin but not the full 1000R price and hardware. It makes less sense if you need a second seat, a winch on day one or a light machine for repeated hand-maneuvering. Shop the exact 82-hp DPS trim, not a family-page photograph, and compare the whole delivered price with a leftover 2026 DPS 850. Frequently asked questions

Is the 2027 Can-Am Outlander DPS 1000 the same as a 1000R?

No. The DPS 1000 is rated at 82 hp and 66 lb-ft. The 1000R is rated at 101 hp and 69 lb-ft and can have different brakes, differential, shocks and equipment depending on package.

How much does the 2027 Outlander DPS 1000 cost?

Can-Am lists the Granite Grey Outlander DPS 1000 from $12,999 U.S. MSRP. Transportation and preparation are excluded, and dealer fees, tax and registration can increase the final price.

What happened to the Outlander DPS 850?

Can-Am calls its 82-hp entry V-twin DPS package Outlander DPS 1000 for 2027. The 2026 DPS 850 and 2027 DPS 1000 sheets both list 82 hp, 66 lb-ft, 942 lb estimated dry weight and a 52.8-inch wheelbase. The new label does not establish a large power increase.

Can the 2027 Outlander DPS 1000 tow a trailer?

The official rating is 1,830 lb for a braked trailer. Can-Am lists a two-inch receiver, plus separate rack limits of 120 lb front and 240 lb rear. It does not publish a total payload rating on the trim sheet.

Does the Outlander DPS 1000 have a winch or touchscreen?

No factory winch is listed for the DPS 1000. It has a 7.6-inch digital display, not the larger touchscreen shown on some premium Outlander packages.

How many people can ride the Outlander DPS 1000?

It is a one-rider ATV. A passenger needs an Outlander MAX or another vehicle designed and rated for two people, not space on the rear rack.
